Free Web Applications

 

Wikipedia-  Students can actually create encyclopedia entries and publish them here.  http://www.wikipedia.org/

 

Podcastings-  Gcast is a site that you can use to record podcasts easily either with your phone or with Audacity, which is a recording program.

Some schools use this for school announcements and put the podcast player on the district webpage for people to access.

Google Applications

  • Google Docs and spread sheet- like a word processor that you can use collaboratively with multiple people working on the same document
  • Presentation-Similar to PowerPoint but free!!
  • Google Earth-a globe that you can zoom in on.  You can pin United Streaming Videos to places and play a Google Earth tour, stopping at pinpointed locations along the way to view streaming video or web pages that coincide with the location.
  • Page Creator-  create free webpages
  • Custom search- allows you to build your own search engine.  Great for helping guide students to specific approved sited when doing research
  • Picasa-photo editor
  • SketchUp- Build 3D models.  Would be good for high school math or CAD teacher


Zoho- another company that offers free tools like word processors, Powerpoint tools (Zoho Show), spreadsheets, etc.

Visiblebody.com - Similar to the Google Earth concept, however you can zoom in on an organ in the human body.

Record your voice by phone and your voice is transferred into a text file.  Presenter said it was 99% accurate.  Could be a great tool for special ed or autistic 
children.

Skype- a free program that allows you computer to call any other computer in the world that also has Skype on it and have voice or video conferences.

Vokis- create an animated character and add a voice recording.  Could be used to create a test study guide or as a tool to introduce each member of your class to a class in a different location.

Blogs - Some examples are Wordpress.com and Edublogs.com.  Can be used to  encourage class participation and writing skills.  Some teachers use blogs for their students to have book discussions.   Some people use this as their webpage.

NVU-  Free design program for creating webpages, which is similar to Frontpage or Dreamweaver.  Must be used in conjunction with FTP program and an owned domain name.  MSU has their students use this program.

Filezilla- free FTP program that you use in conjunction with NVU, FrontPage, or Dreamweaver to transfer files to a server.  This is also used at MSU.

Ikeepbookmarks.com  -a place to bookmark sites online, therefore making it easier to access necessary webpages from any internet connection
